The 2008 Summer of Resistance Film Series
This July, the Northeastern Ohio Antiwar Coalition (NOAC) will sponsor a series of films that document war resistance from a variety of perspectives.
The films, which are free and open to the public, will be shown each Monday at 7:30 PM at Visible Voice Books. Doors at the bookstore will open at 6:30 PM, and moviegoers are encouraged to come early to browse the shop’s wide selection of books.
See below for the schedule and information on each film.
July 7th
This film has won several 2008 national and international film festival awards, and
offers “a new glimpse into the hearts and minds of those who have dedicated themselves to ridding Iraq of its invaders,” (Variety Magazine). The film documents the sentiments experienced and actions taken by a nation's citizens when their homeland is occupied and presents what many view as an essential link in understanding the Iraq war. The Washington Post has declared the film “a remarkable piece of war reporting.”
July 14th
This film is a recipient of several film festival and documentary association awards.
Sir! No Sir! tells the formerly suppressed story of the GI movement to end the war in Vietnam. The film documents a movement that had, in the words of one colonel, “infested the entire armed services” by 1971. Using the stories of those involved in the movement as well as archival material, the movie explores the impact this internal resistance had on the military and the war itself while also revealing how and why this movement has been intentionally erased from the public memory.
July 21th
This film is the story of men and women around the world who resist being annihilated
in the so-called “War on Terror.” Narrated by generals and filmed from the noses of bombs as well as from the front lines of conflicts in Mexico, Argentina, South Africa, Palestine, Korea, Seattle, New York, Afghanistan and Iraq, the movie brings together the images and voices of the war on the ground as well as the stories of those who resist it. Directed by the makers of This Is What Democracy Looks Like and Zapatista.
July 28th
This is the complete series put out by Deep Dish TV, a grassroots satellite network.
In response to the attempt to "shock and awe" Iraq into submission, Deep Dish TV put out a call to artists, filmmakers and editors to create a response of resistance. The result is a vivid collage that addresses the war from a variety of angles, including the US occupation from Iraqi perspectives, war profiteers, the privatization of the Iraqi economy, the Homeland Security attack on Arab and Muslim Americans, and the international resistance to the war.
