Live Music & Poetry: Jean Brandt & John McGrail

Jean Brandt is a lifelong Clevelander, a musician, a poet, an experimental music artist and a dedicated advocate of the arts. As a guitarist and poet her creations have spanned the gamut from singer-songwriter to experimental composer and points in between. The underlying structure both unique and innate to music and language is but part of what excites and drives Jean when she composes as well as performs.

Jean is a firm believer that art is all around us and each of us in fact engages in creation simply living each day. To this end beginning in 1990 Jean organized over 200 art showings at her law office, a storefront she rented in Tremont until 2015. Jean also provided primary support to the Tremont ArtWalk promotion for the Tremont neighborhood from 1993 through 2015. Today she is in the studio or playing guitar when not otherwise practicing law.

Categorized as a folk musician, John McGrail accepts that and on some level even agrees but his influences range far beyond that and they all contribute to the ‘folk’ music that he creates. Analysis of his tunes would find things like odd meters, Floydian textures, and the occasional stinging guitar solo. Then there are the lyrics… well there are those who have described him as the Dark Prince of Cleveland Folk. Never one to be pigeonholed, John uses whatever he has at his disposal to present his music. As of late for live performances it is his trio of Jay Bentoff and Carl Holt. When in the studio he grasps for whatever it is that will get his music across in a manner that makes him happy. Whether it’s loops and programs and virtual instruments or the more traditional type, one will usually find him using all and blending them in a most unique way. Boundaries are for breaking. Jean and John look forward to this opportunity to share some music with friends in the  wonderful space Visible Voice Books provides.
